Marina Khonina is a freelance conference interpreter with international organisations.
She started her freelance career in 2001 as a consecutive interpreter and a translator. Her first interpreting assignment, however, dates back to 1996, when she volunteered to interpret for medical professionals providing primary medical care to women and children in rural Kazakhstan.
In the spring of 2005, Marina completed her first simultaneous interpreting assignment: a five-day health conference at a remote alpine resort. Since then, she was hooked on conference interpreting, working with a variety of international organisations, including UN agencies and the World Bank.
Marina holds a BA (Honours) in Sociology and a degree in Translation and Interpretation. She taught interpreting to university and continuing education students, and continues to mentor young professionals on ProZ.com, a global translators' network.
Born into a Russian-speaking family in the Soviet Republic of Kazakhstan, Marina lived extensively in English-speaking environments, acquiring bilingual fluency in English and Russian the process.
After spending many years in Central Asia, Marina is currently based in Istanbul, Turkey, a global hub that allows her to travel extensively throughout the region for interpreting assignments.
